Transforming Industry with Nature: Rehan Ali Pradhan’s Vision for Biopolymer Innovation

The business world is increasingly being driven by an urgent need for innovation and sustainability. As the world grapples with environmental challenges, one company is striving to transform industries with breakthrough technologies that offer both commercial potential and environmental responsibility. Rehan Ali Pradhan, Co-Founder of Matolutions, speaks to us about how his company is redefining biopolymer solutions and paving the way for a more sustainable future.

A Vision Born from Crisis

Matolutions was founded in 2023, at a time when the world’s environmental crises—wildfires, floods, and deteriorating air quality—were growing ever more alarming. For Rehan Ali Pradhan, these events were not just distressing headlines; they were a wake-up call to act. “The world is facing an urgent crisis. Climate action needs to go beyond incremental steps. It needs scalable solutions that can make a real, lasting impact,” he says.

Rehan’s belief is clear: traditional solutions—like plastics and even paper—are no longer enough. Plastics are unsustainable and contribute to growing pollution, while paper-based alternatives still struggle to meet performance requirements like barrier properties and stability. Matolutions was established to fill this gap by creating biopolymers that are both environmentally sustainable and high-performing.

“We realized the potential of biopolymers, which are derived from renewable resources, to provide a solution to the plastics problem while also performing well across industries. We’re focused on product packaging because it’s one of the most significant contributors to plastic pollution,” Rehan explains.

At Matolutions, our mission is simple yet profound: to prove that sustainability and performance don’t have to be at odds. We are committed to delivering products that are both environmentally responsible and industrially viable.

The Growing Power of Biopolymers

As industries move toward more sustainable practices, Rehan is optimistic about the future of biopolymers. “Biopolymers will soon be a cornerstone of several industries, from packaging to automotive and healthcare. With growing consumer demand for environmentally responsible products and governments pushing for stricter regulations, the demand for biopolymer solutions is set to skyrocket,” he predicts.

While it’s still early in the global adoption curve, Rehan points to notable progress being made worldwide. Companies like Emirates Biotech and Praj Industries are scaling up production of bioplastics, while major packaging and consumer goods companies are beginning to embrace biopolymer alternatives in their products.

Despite the promise, challenges remain, especially around cost. “Biopolymers are still priced higher than traditional plastics, though this will change as we scale up production and infrastructure,” Rehan says. For now, companies like Matolutions are focused on working closely with customers to ensure both performance and cost-effectiveness.

In the fight against plastic pollution, the future isn’t just about replacing materials—it’s about rethinking the entire ecosystem of production, use, and disposal. Biopolymers represent the bridge to a circular, sustainable world.

Innovative Breakthroughs: Leading by Example

Matolutions has already delivered several exciting innovations, notably a range of biodegradable caps and closures made from biopolymers such as PLA, BioPBS, and natural fibers like bamboo dust and tamarind seed powder. The company’s product has passed stringent food safety certifications and is currently undergoing compostability testing. This is a milestone for Rehan and his team, demonstrating that sustainability and product performance can go hand-in-hand.

“The challenge is not just creating an eco-friendly material—it’s making sure it performs as well as or better than traditional plastic. Our biodegradable caps do exactly that. They provide the same barrier properties and durability, but with the added benefit of being compostable,” says Rehan with pride.

Addressing Industry Challenges

One of the biopolymer industry’s biggest hurdles is balancing eco-consciousness with price and performance. “Many bioplastics are priced at 3-4 times the cost of traditional plastics, which can be a significant barrier for adoption,” Rehan explains. “On the other hand, some biopolymer solutions fail to meet performance standards, such as barrier properties and dimensional stability.”

To address these challenges, Matolutions emphasizes collaboration and customer involvement from the very beginning. “We involve stakeholders—raw material suppliers, application partners, and end-users—early in the process. This ensures we understand their needs and can tailor our solutions to meet them,” Rehan adds.

Matolutions’ participation in industry exhibitions and expos also plays a key role in shaping the development process. “We engage directly with potential clients at these events, getting real-time feedback that we can integrate into our R&D. This direct collaboration is vital for ensuring that our solutions align with the market’s needs.”

The true potential of biopolymers isn’t just in their eco-friendliness—it’s in their ability to innovate industries, disrupt conventional thinking, and offer real solutions to global challenges.

Sustainability at the Core of Innovation

Innovation and sustainability are the twin pillars upon which Matolutions builds its products. “We believe that sustainability must go beyond the materials we use. It’s embedded in everything we do, from the raw materials to the additives we incorporate. Even our processing aids are sourced from used cooking oils and plant-based oils,” Rehan explains.

The company’s outcome-driven approach to innovation ensures that every development aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. “We’re not just focused on developing a product that’s better for the environment; we also want to ensure it’s commercially viable and performs at the highest standards.”

Collaboration: The Secret to Success

Rehan attributes much of Matolutions’ success to strategic collaborations. “From day one, we’ve engaged with partners, from technology incubators like IIT-Roorkee’s TIDES Technology Business Incubator to industry leaders. These collaborations have helped us scale our technology and refine our product offerings.”

Rehan is particularly proud of Matolutions’ participation in India’s Nidhi Prayas Fund, which helped accelerate the company’s technology readiness level. Additionally, the company has worked with machine manufacturers and industry experts to optimize their processes and ensure the scalability of their products.

“Collaboration is crucial in this field. It’s not just about working with suppliers and manufacturers—it’s about creating a shared vision across the entire value chain,” says Rehan.

The Road Ahead: Transforming Industries and Impacting the Planet

Looking ahead, Rehan is focused on scaling Matolutions’ biodegradable caps and closures for commercialization by 2025. “We’re on track to capture a $20 million market and eliminate over one million metric tons of non-recyclable plastic,” he says.

Matolutions also plans to continue innovating, developing new biopolymer solutions for other sectors and expanding its reach globally. “The potential of biopolymers is enormous. With the right partnerships, innovation, and scale, we can help transition the world towards a bio-based, circular economy,” Rehan concludes.

Every small innovation contributes to a larger shift. Our work in biopolymers is about creating ripples of change that will one day make a tide of difference in reducing environmental impact worldwide.

Advice for Entrepreneurs in Sustainability

Rehan’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple: “Collaboration is key. The journey of innovation is too complex to go it alone. Build partnerships with others in the ecosystem, whether they are suppliers, clients, or fellow entrepreneurs. Work together to push the boundaries of what’s possible.”

For those looking to make a meaningful impact in sustainability, Rehan also stresses the importance of staying customer-focused and adaptable. “The market is changing rapidly. The key is to stay agile, listen to your customers, and always be ready to innovate. If you do, you’ll not only succeed in business—you’ll make a real difference in the world.”
