Indra Mitra: Leading a New Era in Water Technology Innovation
A Passion for Water Technology
Indra Mitra’s journey into the field of water technology is deeply rooted in his lifelong appreciation for nature and a strong desire to create sustainable solutions. His passion led him to pursue graduate studies in Environmental Engineering, a decision that would shape the course of his career. At Vanderbilt University, USA, he had the opportunity to study under the esteemed Prof. Richard Speece, whose teachings and mentorship ignited Indra’s enthusiasm for wastewater engineering—a field that blends scientific research, technological innovation, and environmental stewardship.
Inspired by his mentor’s work, Indra embarked on a career dedicated to solving some of the most pressing water-related challenges. Over the years, he has worked with leading technology, consulting, and engineering firms across the USA and India. His projects, many of which have received industry accolades, were funded by prestigious global agencies such as the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). He is a key architect of developing water and wastewater master plans for several cities. In 2019, he joined Cambi as the Director in India, a role that aligns with his vision of advancing sustainable water and wastewater solutions in a rapidly developing world.
“Water is not just a resource; it’s the foundation of life. By combining innovation with practical solutions, we can turn wastewater challenges into opportunities and create a future where every drop counts.”
A Defining Leadership Moment
Throughout his career, Indra has had many leadership experiences that shaped his approach to problem-solving and team management. One of the most defining moments occurred when he assumed responsibility for three large-scale projects at a multinational firm. The projects were plagued by inefficiencies, miscommunication, and delays, leading to dissatisfaction among clients and internal stakeholders. The root of the problem lay in a centralized decision-making system that created bottlenecks and stifled efficiency.
Indra’s solution was both simple and transformative: he restructured the team by assigning dedicated groups of engineers to each project, appointing project managers with clear authority, and empowering them to make independent decisions. This new structure eliminated unnecessary layers of bureaucracy, streamlined communication, and fostered a sense of ownership within the teams. Within just two weeks, previously frustrated clients began to provide positive feedback, and project timelines improved significantly. This experience reinforced Indra’s belief that leadership is all about enabling others, removing obstacles, and empowering and trusting teams to deliver results.
Values Driving Change in Water Technology
Indra’s professional ethos is deeply rooted in a desire to contribute to society through meaningful work. He firmly believes that access to clean water and effective wastewater management is not just a matter of convenience but a fundamental necessity for public health, environmental sustainability, and economic growth.
In India, where water scarcity and untreated wastewater pose significant challenges, Indra has made it his mission to advocate for proper wastewater treatment and promote water reuse. He is committed to bridging the gap between technological advancements and practical applications, ensuring that communities benefit from innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable solutions. To him, professional success is measured not just by financial gains but by the positive impact he can create on a broader scale.
“Innovation in water technology is not just about efficiency—it’s about securing our future.”
Overcoming Career Challenges
Having worked extensively in both the USA and India, Indra encountered significant professional challenges upon his return to India. The water technology sector in India was largely focused on design engineering and project management, with limited emphasis on technological innovation. This presented a dilemma: how could he leverage his expertise in a market that was not yet fully receptive to advanced water treatment methodologies?
Determined to create an impact, Indra pivoted into Sales and Technology, where he found an opportunity to influence decision-making processes by providing clients with innovative, cost-effective solutions. His technical knowledge, combined with a strategic approach, helped him win numerous projects and position himself as a trusted advisor to clients who valued expertise in their procurement decisions. Through persistence and adaptability, he successfully navigated the industry landscape and carved a niche for himself as a leader in water technology.
A Day in the Life of a Director
As the Director of Cambi in India, Indra’s role is multifaceted, blending strategic planning with hands-on engagement in the field. His daily responsibilities include identifying new sales leads, Client interaction, preparing proposals, collaborating with Cambi’s headquarters in Norway, and educating stakeholders about the benefits of advanced sludge treatment technologies.
His work requires extensive travel, participation in industry conferences, and active networking to foster partnerships and knowledge exchange. Acting as a bridge between the cultural and regulatory landscapes of India and Norway, Indra ensures seamless collaboration between his team and clients. By advocating for innovative solutions and engaging with policymakers, he is shaping the future of water sustainability in India.
Pioneering Sludge Treatment in India
One of Indra’s most significant achievements at Cambi has been his role in establishing a market for sludge treatment in India. Before his involvement, sludge treatment was an often-overlooked aspect of wastewater management, despite its critical importance in protecting public health and the environment. Untreated sludge posed severe risks, including spread of diseases and affecting the health of the citizens.
Recognizing this gap, Indra, along with his team, led a series of educational initiatives aimed at raising awareness among municipal authorities, policymakers, and industry professionals. He organized industry events, facilitated knowledge-sharing sessions, and invited global experts to India to showcase best practices. His efforts have contributed to a paradigm shift, with municipalities now incorporating Class A sludge standards into their tenders and the government drafting new sludge management policies. Through his advisory role, Indra continues to shape national strategies, ensuring that sludge treatment becomes an integral part of India’s wastewater management framework.
“Revolutionizing water technology means thinking beyond the present.”
Influences and Inspirations
Indra draws inspiration from pioneering figures in the field of water technology, including Dr. Glen Daigger, the former Technical Director at CH2M Hill (now Jacobs). Dr. Daigger’s dedication to wastewater treatment and his ability to translate scientific research into real-world applications have served as a benchmark for Indra’s professional aspirations. By following in the footsteps of such industry leaders, Indra has developed a relentless drive for technological mastery, leading to numerous successful projects that push the boundaries of innovation.
Achieving Work-Life Balance
Balancing a demanding career with personal well-being is a challenge that many professionals face, and Indra is no exception. However, he firmly believes that efficiency, delegation, and team empowerment are key to maintaining equilibrium. By prioritizing structured time management and ensuring that workloads are evenly distributed, he has fostered a work culture that values both productivity and personal well-being.
Indra encourages open communication, trust, and flexibility within his team, creating an environment where individuals feel empowered to contribute their best work without feeling overburdened. His leadership approach underscores the importance of sustainability not just in water management but also in maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
“Technology and sustainability must flow together for a water-secure world.”
A Lasting Impact
Looking ahead, Indra envisions a future where wastewater management is not just an afterthought but a core component of national water sustainability strategies. His long-term goal is to influence policy and regulatory advancements that drive the adoption of cutting-edge water technologies across India and beyond. By championing sludge treatment, promoting water reuse, and advocating for knowledge-sharing, he is laying the groundwork for a cleaner, healthier future.
As Indra continues to push boundaries and drive innovation in water technology, his legacy will be one of transformation. His work is not just about solving immediate challenges but about shaping a future where water resources are managed efficiently, equitably, and sustainably. Through his leadership, expertise, and unwavering commitment to societal progress, he is truly leading a new era in water technology innovation.
